Picking The Perfect Dress
“For my prom I really wanted to wear a bright color — something that was going to pop and stand out. [You have to think about] how you are going to shine in your photo and how you’re going to look different.”

Going Solo
“I was dating my first boyfriend in high school for a long time, and we broke up before prom. I hadn’t met anyone else that I really wanted to go with, and my friends have always been amazing. So I went with my friends and got a million photos with them!”

Style On a Budget
“My dress was about $175, and for accessories I went through my mom’s closet. The earrings, bracelet and rings I wore were all hers.” Shay’s one splurge? Her shoes! “I bought nice, crystal shoes — you have to get something that makes you really excited. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but I really did feel like a princess putting my shoes on!”

Hair Disaster
What prom night is complete without one?! After Shay’s mom curled her hair too tight, “I washed it again and we had to redo it with a curling iron. And I had to redo my makeup because of the tears! I was like, ‘I should have gotten it done professionally!’ — but my mom came through.”

On Whether She Asks Guys Out
“In high school, I knew the guys, so I would have asked. Now I’m the shy girl! I see a cute guy in Starbucks and I’m like…Oh..Okay, and I walk out. But who knows? Maybe I will ask somebody on a date soon!”

Dream Prom Date Now
“Ryan Gosling. He is so cute and funny. It’s important to have a date who can make you laugh, not someone you’re going to feel nervous around.”
